22/05/2024 Wednesday devotions

In last week’s devotions we were reminded that we must surrender every part of our lives to God. We do this by embracing the challenges of following Jesus, by changing our lives so that we grow closer to God each day.

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.James 4:8-10 (NIV)

I came across the a piece of music by Gavin Whitehouse a few weeks ago, called ‘Closer’. It blends together two songs, ‘Draw Me Close’ by Kelly Carpenter, and the hymn tune ‘Draw Me Nearer’ by Fanny Crosby and William Howard Doane. These two songs help us to focus on our need to be close to our God.

I pray as you focus on the words associated with the songs included in ‘Closer’ you too will want to draw closer to God.

Draw me close to you
Never let me go
I lay it all down again
To hear you say that I'm your friend
You are my desire
No one else will do
Cause nothing else can take your place
To feel the warmth of your embrace
Help me find the way
Bring me back to you

You're all I want
You're all I've ever needed
You're all I want
Help me know you are near

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
