Band Visit Motherwell SA

Last updated: 07/03/2009

28th - Band Visit Motherwell Salvation Army

The band's first festival of 2009, saw the band having to travel just a few miles to Motherwell for the festival at Motherwell Salvation Army.

The programme included several items which will be included in the band's new CD "Diversity" which will be recorded in March (see March 2009 News for further details). Of these items, several were performed by the band for the first time tonight. These included "The Lion King" which features a variety of themes from the musical of the same name, Gabriel's oboe from "The Mission" and also the flugel horn solo "Through It All" which was performed by Lynn Shanks - This solo was written specifically for Lynn by Andrew Blyth and features the melodies "Through It All " and "Shenandoah".

As always the band played very well tonight as did all the soloists. This included:-

Cornet solo "Rhapsody for Cornet and Band " was played by Yvonne Ferguson,

Gemma Gunn sang "The Rose",

Flugel horn solo "Through It All" was played by Lynn Shanks,

Chris Shanks played the euphonium solo "The Song of the Brother".

The bands from Motherwell and Bellshill united to play the march "New Zealand Warriors" as a massed band item. The march was conducted in this the Motherwell Bandmaster.

Bandmaster Ian Dickie presented the Motherwell Bandmaster with a cheque for £120 to go towards the bands instrument fund - Bellshill band members paid the entrance fee for the evening so that this donation could be made to Motherwell Band.

From a personal point of view it was an emotional night for me as it was the first time in over three years that I'd been able to play at one of the band engagements. Although the evening was emotional for me, it was also one of great happiness because of all that's happened since the last time I was able to take my place in the band during one of our engagements (see my testimony for more details). For me the highlight of the night was Lynn's flugel horn solo as the words associated with the music were particularly apt to me, and so I have included them below:-

Though the future seems uncertain

Though the fear erodes my peace

Though the circumstance seems hopeless

And the doubting will not cease

I will claim what He has promised

For my heart must recognise

Mine is not to question

But keep focused on the prize.

Through it all I choose to serve the saviour

Through it all I claim Christ as my friend

Through it all my faith will never waver

Till He calls me home or comes again

This path now set before me

Is not my route of choice

Yet I must keep moving forward

Listening to His still small voice

This step along this journey

He reminds me I'm His own

And through the cold dark loneliness

I'm aware I'm not alone

Through it all I choose to serve the saviour

Through it all I claim Christ as my friend

Through it all my faith will never waver

Till He calls me home or comes again
