Golf Weekend

Last updated: 13/04/2009

Golf Weekend

Here we are again, reporting on yet another great weekend of golf and fellowship together.    This year we went to a new venue at Crail, where we played the Balcomie Links and also the Craighead Course.

We gathered for our bacon rolls and had the usual discussion about sharks, false handicaps, have not played since last year etc etc etc etc.    After falling about laughing at all the attempts to adjust handicaps upwards, we set off on a different competition this year.  The staff would not allow our Texas Scramble, so we had to try and make a team competition with similar rules.

We started on the picturesque Balcomie links in a howling gale.   This would certainly test all players.   Some of the Par 3’s were only reachable with a full blow of the driver.   The winners of this year’s team event were Ian Simpson (Captain), Benny Conway, John Hill and Bill Stewart.

We then had our usual soup and sandwiches before starting our first round of the tournament.    The format for the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning rounds is a stableford singles event.  The combined scores are added together to get the overall champion.    This year we had some new starters, Craig Dickie, Billy Cowan and Kevin Waddington.    Craig Dickie was a resounding winner of the Crystal and also the Shark Award after playing some fine golf for a 15 year old.  (He must have had a good teacher!!!!!!!!!).  Ian Dickie again won the Jack Dickie Trophy for the best Saturday Morning stableford score.

A new trophy was presented to Drew Davidson for the best nett score at the par 3’s.   This was in memory of one of our members John Stewart who was recently “Promoted to Glory”.   John never missed an outing until recent years when his health deteriorated.   The winner of the Dale Ferguson trophy was Alan Milligan who scored the best for the Sunday morning round, (Must have had bannofee pie).

The other prizewinners were as follows:-

Longest Drive               Chris Shanks

Nearest The Pin            Ian Simpson

Longest Drive               Craig Dickie

Nearest The Pin            Chris Shanks

We had a lovely meal, followed by the usual funny presentations where everyone received a prize.

Once again we have to thank Bill Stewart for organising the entire weekend and all the effort he puts into this annual event. Roll on next year.
