2nd - Alpha Course Starts

Alpha / A Life Worth Living

The Alpha Course is an introduction to the Christian faith that is relevant to the day we live in and runs for 10 weeks, with a day or weekend away.  It provides the opportunity and space to ask some of the bigger questions that we all have... in a friendly and open environment... and explore the Christian faith in a low-key, relaxed, and non-threatening setting.

In addition, for the first time, we will be running concurrently the follow-on course from Alpha called "A Life Worth Living".  This course is a 9 week course based on the book of Philippians. The course is aimed specifically at those starting out in the Christian life and is ideal for those who have just completed an Alpha course... although it is recommended for everyone on the Christian journey.  Each talk explains how it is possible to live the Christian life positively, practically and joyfully, covering such topics as ‘New Attitude’, ‘New Friendships’ and ‘New Responsibilities’.

The autumn series of the Alpha Course & A Life Worth Living will commence on Monday, 2nd October.  A meal will be provided at 7pm for everyone able to join us at this time.  A short time of live worship will start at around 7.45pm with accompaniment from our in-house worship band, BLOC, followed by group teaching presented by our ministers, Captains Alec & Andrea Still.  Afterwards, there will be time to catch up over a coffee and discuss the points raised.

Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge for the meal.

If you wish to attend or want further info please contact Thomas Mathie (headphonaught@yahoo.co.uk) or Captain Alec Still (01698 841899)

CD Recording - Report From the B/M

Some of the band arrived at Bellshill Corps to start to load drums, staging and equipment to the Uddingston Old Parish Church.   We then met Brian Hillson and Daniel Locke from B&H sounds and started to rig up the recording equipment.  After a few hours of graft, we were ready for the  vocal soloists.   Gemma and Olwyn arrived to record their contributions to the CD,  "Wishing you were someone here again" and "Heaven's Child".   This got us off to a great start with the quality and feeling put in from the girls. The band started to arrive around 6.30 and we eventually started to record around 7.00.  Thursday night was a night when we were nervous, but managed to record 10 tracks.  We finished around 10.00 and all went home tired.

Friday was to be a very challenging day for me as B/M due to several nerves and emotions taking over.  But we still managed to record another 11 tracks including our vocalists.  The devil was really trying to get to me that night, as I left the church concerned for some of the bandsmen/women.   Saturday was a new day, and as I was driving to the church, I saw a large rainbow in the sky.  This was God's sign that we were going to have a good day.  Once again we recorded around 9.00 until 12.30 and then we all went to Angels for lunch.  2.00 saw us starting the second session of recording and we eventually finished the 2 CD's at 5.00.    All hands to the pump for clearing the church and helping B&H load the equipment.   We eventually left the church and some of the band enjoyed a Chinese meal at the hall.

I am really looking forward to hearing the CD's and mastering and editing them next month.   I know that God will use these in his own special way.

The "Christmas Praise" CD will be launched in December with the "Musical Aspects" one launched in the Spring of 2007.

I would like to thank all the band for all the hard work during the past few months in preparation for this project.  We had great fellowship during these past few days and especially our youngsters from the YP Band who helped in the recording.

Please support the band by purchasing the CD's, as any profits made are going towards the Corps Building Fund.

CD Recording - The Yooung Folks' Experience

Any time your Corps Officer, Bandmaster & Deputy Bandmaster and YP Band Leader (otherwise known as my Mum) pull you into the office to ‘have a word with you’ its only natural that your heart skips a couple of beats. Even though you know you are superbly well behaved at all times, your brain goes into overdrive of what possible reason they may have to want to speak to you. The picture on the left taken at the CD recording, shows Claire with her Mum (Yvonne) and Dad (David).

As YP Band Members Laura, Charlene, Craig, Robert and I found ourselves in this exact situation. As we were escorted into the office, temperatures were rising, completely oblivious to the fact that this meeting was one of opportunity and praise and not of confrontation.

After being encouraged to come along to band practises over the past year to help us improve our playing and let us enjoy the atmosphere of the band, our hard work was recognised by the leaders and in this meeting we were asked if we would like to take part in the recording of the bands two new CD’s in October.

To say it was a shock is an understatement. But I’m not complaining as it was a privilege to be asked and an experience I wouldn’t have missed.

The weeks building up to the recording left me experiencing a mixture of emotions-nerves, excitement and fear to name a few. Although I have played in a big band before I have never been under quite so much pressure to get it right. So yes the cornet was pulled out of the case more than once a week, which is not a common occurrence and was practised till my parts were right.

The weeks soon flew by and the day of the recording was finally here. Full of nerves we walked into Mr Tunnock’s beautiful church not prepared for what we were about to see. There were microphones everywhere!! It hit me then and there that every noise I made would be picked up by these monster mics and would be recorded. Once we settled into our seats and stopped panicking about tipping off the risers the full experience became much more enjoyable.

The encouragement from all the older members of the band was amazing, they really made me feel at ease and as though I was part of the band. Their enthusiasm made me realise everyone is putting their everything into the recordings to make the CD’s as good as possible. We are no Black Dyke and we would never claim to be but what ever may come out of these CD’s and however many people are blessed by the music we play is more than enough gratification for us.

On a personal note the recording has been a great experience for me and an experience that I am so grateful for being allowed to be a part of.

CD Recording - Report from Bandman Jeff Wilson

On the 4th,5th,6th of October 2006 the band met at Uddingston Old Parish Church to record two CD's.

The first CD is to be released in early December and will be entitled Christmas Praise. The second one, Musical Aspects should launch in the spring of next year.

Before we commenced recording on the Thursday evening, Brian Hilson the recording engineer addressed the band and stressed the importance of these recordings and how many people will listen to them and hopefully receive blessings from them.

Although at the outset the band were nervous and perhaps apprehensive about what lay ahead, we soon got on with the recordings, concentration was high and a lot of good work was done.

Over the three days we prayed many times that this venture would be a success, not only in raising money for our corps building fund but that many people will listen and be blessed by the music, whether its by the vocal soloists also featured or the playing of the band.

So we look forward to early December to the release of Christmas Praise, its our prayer as a band that this medium will be used to make people think of the true meaning behind Christmas.

To sum up ,this experience was hard work, good fun and hopefully very rewarding.
