Retired B/M Jackie Dickie was Promoted to Glory on
Wednesday 3Rd March 2004. His funeral
service took place on Monday 8th March at Bellshill Salvation Army. The service was conducted by Majors Dean, Alison Logan
(Greenock) Prayers were offered by Captain Karen Robb (Bellshill), and a tribute
was given from Band Sergeant Sam Ritchie. Bandmaster Ian Dickie prepared a
tribute for his dad, which was read by Captain Gary Robb. The band played “The
Pioneers” and the songsters sang “Count your Blessings” The hall was full
and overflowing with people paying their respects to Jackie. The lively service
had been already prepared by Jackie prior to his passing. A short service
followed at the Daldowie Crematorium.
Jackie was bandmaster for 26 years until he retired in
1984. During his reign, the band visited places like Inverness, Archway, Selby,
and Kendal. Jackie was a true Christian gentleman, who never wanted any
headlines. He would encourage people by his quiet manner. He continued to play
in the band until December 2003. He was delighted when his son Ian took over the
band several years ago. His banding highlight was the Easter Tour of the
Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany in April 2003. His favourite piece of music
was “The Light of the World”.
He will be sadly missed, but his influence will be shared
within the Corps for many years to come.
The picture below shows the last time he conducted the band
at Cleland Church Carol Concert in December 2003.
