We started our Sunday by leading worship at Coventry City Salvation Army by played, Prelude on Lavenham (Geoffrey Nobes) and then the song arrangement Hide Me Now (arr. Paul Sharman).
Coventry Singing Company provided a lovely song, and their YP Band played fantastically too.
Dayna Mathie shared a message for the children based around this morning’s bible reading Acts 1:1-11. She asked some of the children to help, the promise of sweets helped her get some volunteers!
Christopher Keane shared his testimony with us. He told us how he visited Ukraine in 2018 with the Ukraine: Vision of Hope team, where he helped run a kids club. He told us how he was challenged by his experience there to change his career, and so is now in a job working with children and is gaining a qualification while he works there.
Before David Kendall shared the message with us, the band played Dean Goffin’s wonderful selection The Challenge of the Cross, which features the song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
save in the death of Christ, my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them through his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
During the bible message this morning, David Kendall spoke about the ascension of Jesus, and how the disciples must have felt a great absence when Jesus ascended to heaven. Just as the disciples had to carry on God’s work, after Jesus’ departure, so we have to carry on that work today. In doing so, God has promised us that all will be well.
The band concluded worship with The Lord Is Gracious (Darren Bartlett arr. Olaf Ritman). It is based on Psalm 103 and includes the words “The Lord is gracious, abounding in perfect love, and slow to anger. He rules the earth in Heav’n above”.
We would like to thank the Coventry young peoples’ sections for their contributions to worship this morning.
