Originally from the Sunny South by the sea, we entered the Salvation Army Training College in 1990 from Hove corps. Commissioned in 1992 to a ‘pioneer’ ministry in Bolton, we served the next 13 years in the Greater Manchester area, mostly in inner-city areas either starting something new or revamping church to be more appealing and relevant to the needs of a rapidly changing culture. During this time three children came along – twins Amy and Tom and (much) later Simon. A menagerie of small animals, classic cars and a sense of adventure accompanies our family.
It was a big change to come to Bellshill – where we had a big congregation, great senior and YP sections and professional people who brought many valuable gifts and skills into the corps. Interestingly though, many things were similar – the rain for a start.
We were able to bring much of what we had learned and our passion for the mission of the Salvation Army, quite easily into a very different situation. Four years on we feel we have a healthy mix of ‘traditional’ and ‘something different’ with many emerging ministries born out of the growing convictions of a bunch of people passionate about sharing the love of God with each other and those who do not know Him. They have given and taught us so much. Yes we still have the tradition, but what we do with it is increasingly innovative. And the band is a good example. The latest CD ‘Diversity’ we feel reflects where the corps is at the moment. We count it a privilege to lead people who are willing to take up the challenge of being the people of God in this day and age. |
